Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition won't start or keeps crashing or produces Error message FSX failed to start (Unknown Error)

If you are having problems running Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition on your PC please try the following steps:

Was Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition running before?

Was Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition running previously? If so ask yourself what has changed between the game running correctly and now not running. Examples might include:

  • Have you installed a new bit of hardware such as a new hard drive or graphics card?
  • Have you updated your Windows operating system?
  • Have you updated a driver such as your graphics card driver?
  • Have edited or in any way modified the Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition game files such as adding custom lines to the Scenery.cfg file?
  • Have installed a third party add-on or mod for Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition?

If you have made a change to your game or PC setup where possible try to revert that change. Once you reverted the change try starting Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition again to see if the problem persists.

Verifying your game files on Steam

This causes Steam to compare all the Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition files installed on your computer against the ones it believes you should have. In order to complete this procedure you will need to be connected to the Internet.

To verify your game files please do the following:

  1. Open the Steam client
  2. Right click the game in your games library and select 'Properties'
  3. Select the 'Local files' tab and click on 'Verify integrity of gam cache'

This will detect any corrupted or missing files and automatically replace them for you.

Free up your computer’s memory

Running lots of different programs in Windows at the same time may mean that Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition does not have enough memory available to run correctly. Your computer might be displaying an Out of memory error as a result. Check that your PC meets the minimum memory requirements to run Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition. The game requires 2 GB RAM to run. If you have less than the required 2 GB RAM then you will be unable to run the game. Please note that we recommend you have more RAM for increase performance and enable the use of addons. Ensure that you have no other programs running (including your internet browser) that may be taking up excess memory.

Reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Packages

FSX: SE requires the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Packages in order to run. These should install automatically alongside FSX: SE but occasional an error can occur. To reinstall these packages follow these steps. Make sure that you install them to the same hard drive that you have FSX: SE installed on. It does not have to be the same directory however.

  1. Locate the following directory on your PC:

[Your instal drive] Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2005

  1. In the directory you should find two files called vcredist_x64.exe and vcredist_x86.exe. Run each file one at a time and follow any on screen instructions.
  2. Restart your PC and try loading FSX: SE again.

  1. Download both of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Packages from the Microsoft website.
  2. Once downloaded run both of the files from your PC and follow any on screen instructions.
  3. Restart your PC and try loading FSX: SE again.

Reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Steam provides the ability to reinstall the game to the default system. To perform this reinstallation, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Steam client
  2. Select "View Games Library" from the "Games" menu
  3. Right-click the Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition icon and select'delete local content'
  4. Select the game and press 'Install' from the main window
